Greensleeves is a traditional English ballad written by an unknown composer. There is a legend that King Henry VIII wrote Greensleeves about Anne Boleyn. This is not likely, however, because the song is written in a style which was not known in England until after Henry VIII died.
The earliest known mention of Greensleeves occurred in September 1580, when a printer named Richard Jones had licensed to him "A new Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves". On that same day, printer Edward White also had a license for "A ballad, being the Ladie Greene Sleeves Answere to Donkyn his frende".
Thus began a back and forth struggle between the printers for the rights to this beautiful melody, with various versions being published. It was not until 1584 that Jones printed his final version, which is the one we know today.

I selected only two parts of a long poem. Excuse me for my bad accents. I tried to pronounce the words as Middle English pronunciations. For example I pronounced the "th" of thee and thy interdentally, and "gh", as Germans (or Scottish "ch" in "loch")

گرین اسلیوز، ترانه ای سنتی از سرزمین انگلیس است که توسط آهنگسازی ناشناس ساخته شده است. افسانه ای مبنی بر ساخته شدن این ترانه توسط هنری هشتم برای ان بولین (همسر دوم هنری هشتم و مادر ملکه الیزابت) وجود دارد؛ این افسانه اما، غیر محتمل به نظر می رسد، چرا که آهنگ به شیوه ای نوشته شده که در انگلیس تا وقتی هنری هشتم زنده بود، شناخته شده نبود.
در 1584 میلادی، جدیدترین روایت ( روایت های بسیاری از این آهنگ در دست است) از این ملودی زیبا نگاشته شد، که همین اجرا بر اساس آن می باشد. چنگ این آهنگ را بانو سالی فلچر نواخته اند و من صدای خود را روی نواخته ی دلکش ایشان میکس کردم.
سعی کرده ام تلفظ خود را به تلفظ انگلیسی میانه نزدیک کنم، برای مثال در ضمایر دوم شخص مفرد، از واج بین دندانی /ذ/ (مشابه تلفظ حرف ذال در زبان های پهلوی و پارسیک و اوستایی، نیز عربی) استفاده کرده ام (/ذای/، /ذی/) و جی-ایچ ها را نیز مانند آلمانی ها /خ/ تلفظ نمودم. اما از آکسان های زبان انگلیسی باستان -نیز انگلیسی امروزین- اطلاعی نداشتم. بنا براین اگر اشکالی در آکسان ها دیدید، ندیدید!
